Místico judío alemán y estudioso del Talmud. Su esposa e hijas fueron asesinadas por los cruzados en 1196; sin embargo, continuó enseñando una doctrina de amor a la humanidad. Después de estudiar con
Yehudá ben Samuel, con quien estaba emparentado, fue rabino en Worms (1201). Intentó unificar el misticismo de la
Cábala con el
Talmud. Su obra cumbre fue el código ético,
Rokeah (1505). Creía que Dios mismo era incognoscible, pero que el
kavod, un ángel regente que era una emanación de Dios, sí era cognoscible. Sus escritos son una fuente de información importante sobre el hasidismo medieval.
